REAR EXTENSION, WOODHALL ROAD, EDINBURGH

A two-storey extension to the rear of an existing bungalow situated at the top end of a long, sloping site. The split-level upper floor of the extension accommodates the new living room and an adjacent music room/ office, all accessed from the remodelled kitchen/ dining area. The lower, garden-level floor of the extension provides two bedrooms, a family bathroom, and a utility cupboard. A glass wall above the new stair offers views from the entry hallway, through the house and out to the rear garden beyond.

The forms and nature of the various elements that make up the shape of the extension were conceived in response to multiple planning constraints as well as an attempt to temper the visual impact of what was to become quite a prominent addition to the existing house.
